Our Food

Thaw the frozen raw dog food in the refrigerator for 1-2 days until soft and unfrozen. Once the food is thawed and measured to meet your dog’s requirements (see our feeding guidelines for more info) you can place it in your dog’s metal or glass bowl! Always store unused portions in the fridge for the next feeding. Do not exceed refrigerator storage for more than 7 days once thawed.

Our meals are ground fresh every week in an FDA inspected facility at cold temperatures to ensure the safety of our food. They are then deep frozen according to FDA standards to ensure no bacteria survives. Since we package and deliver your dog’s meals on a convenient subscription you can always count on the freshest food possible.

For adult dogs, we recommend feeding a raw diet either once or twice per day. If twice per day, split the daily suggested feeding in half. For puppies, we recommend feeding raw food 3 times per day, splitting each meal equally based on suggested daily feeding for their weight.

Traditional veterinarians may often have a negative opinion of a raw diet based on our society’s adoption of the cheap & convenient kibble diet during WWII. Many vets simply do not know or understand the nutritional benefits of a raw diet. Some have also encountered dogs fed an unbalanced DIY raw diet. We only sell complete and balanced raw diet that meet or exceed AAFCO guidelines. This way you can be sure your dog is getting exactly the nutrition they need to thrive.

Feeding your dog a raw diet is no different than handling raw meat when you cook for yourself or your family. Always wash your hands and sanitize your work area & food utensils after feedings (including your pet’s bowls once they are done).

The biggest difference between feeding raw vs. kibble (besides the amazing health benefits) is that you won’t leave raw food in the bowl for hours allowing your dog to graze. Most dogs will gobble up raw food in a few minutes, but if they aren’t hungry pick up any leftovers after about 15 minutes. Leaving it out will only cause the meat to spoil.

Remember to only thaw what you are going to use. Raw meat typically lasts 3-5 days when thawed in the fridge.

Refrigerated leftovers should be stored in a glass container. Regularly wash pet dishes – make sure to pick them up after eating, sorry no grazing allowed. Leaving the food out will cause the meat to spoil.

Every dog is different and how much food they need each day depends on several factors such as age, weight, activity level, etc. However, a general rule of thumb is to feed your dog 2-3% of their body weight daily. Our food costs between $6-$7 per pound.  You can do the math or simply take our assessment to see how much fuel your dog needs every day to keep them healthy and thriving.

Working with our top pet nutritionist, we have developed a sophisticated meal calculator that optimizes calories needs for different combinations of breed, sex, age, weight, activity level, etc. However, each dog’s metabolism can vary and we work with you to update your meal plan after a few months to ensure you are feeding the perfect amount of food to your dog each month.

It’s easy to feed Heritage Prime while on the go! When traveling with raw food, it’s best to start with it completely frozen and keep it in an insulated container along with a few ice packs. If it’s going to be in a cooler with other food we highly recommend double bagging it a ziplock bag, just like you would for any raw meat. In addition, if you are going to be somewhere for a while, you can always make a special order and send food directly to your destination.

If your dog doesn’t love one of our blends, we will happily adjust your subscription to incorporate the blends they do love. Or you can opt for a refund if you donate the remaining food to a local shelter.
